CAISTOR CENTRE, Ont. (July 8, 2019) – Team Turner Racing returned to action for a doubleheader weekend of 360 Sprint Car action with stops at Ohsweken Speedway on July 5 and Brighton Speedway to compete with the Southern Ontario Sprints on July 6 where the team managed to gather three top-five finishes and five top-10 results, collectively. Ryan Turner led the way with a pair of top-five results while Cory Turner earned his third win of the season on Saturday at Brighton.
At Ohsweken on Friday, all three drivers were able to race forward from their starting spots in their heat races. Both Jamie and Ryan claimed second place finishes in their heats while Cory raced to a third-place result after starting eighth.
“Friday night we tried a bit of a different setup and we were fast right out of the gate,” Ryan said of his Kingpin Farms/Burger Barn-sponsored No.91. “In the heat race, we made some interesting moves and it all panned out when we ran second. I think I almost had something for the leader, but kind of had some brake problems late in the heat.”
Come Feature time, Cory lined-up fourth while Ryan was fifth and Jamie started from ninth. Cory and Ryan were both able to race among the top-five for the majority of the race before Ryan claimed a fourth-place finish and Cory tallied a sixth-place result.
“I wish it had gone green to checkered because I thought I was going to get by some guys in lapped traffic,” Ryan said of the Feature. “I was running a bit different line than the leaders because they were all up top and I was on the bottom. I just need to find a little more momentum there.”
“We were good early,” Cory said. “We were up to third until about lap 10 and then Westbrook got by me, my brother got by me, and we got a late caution before Mack DeMan ended up getting to me with a couple laps to go. The car was really good early and it just really got free. We haven’t had a track slow down like that in a long time.”
Jamie came home in 11th-place on Friday at Ohsweken and was quite pleased both with the racetrack and how drivable his car was.
“I was pretty decent Friday night and I just faded a bit at the end,” Jamie said. “The track was in exceptional shape and it was really good to see the changes they made at the track. I can really see we’re going to have a lot of fun there the rest of the year. We missed it a little bit, but we were quick early on so we were happy with it.”
After making the trip east on Saturday afternoon to Brighton, all three cars were quick once again in heat race action with Cory and Ryan both claiming heat race wins while Jamie was second to Cory in the first heat race. All three drivers made it in the redraw and Cory started outside the front row with Ryan lining up fifth and Jamie in eighth.
Cory jumped out to the lead on the opening lap and then paced all 25 laps to score the win.
“Our car unloaded fast,” Cory said. “We were good in hot laps, we were good in the heat race and I was lucky enough to draw the front row in the Feature and lead every lap just like the last time we were here. Our car was just a Cadillac. We could drive through the middle, on the top, on the bottom. We just went where the lapped traffic wasn’t. We were good.”
Ryan ran second from lap three until the final lap when he ended up third after Mitch Brown got past him in traffic. His third-place finish was the third-straight podium finish to start the SOS season for the series point leader.
“We still have the points lead after Saturday and we’ve been really good,” Ryan said. “We’re almost there, we just need one or two adjustments and we’ll be right there for the win.”
Jamie ended up with a sixth-place finish after battling for a top-five spot late in the race. It was a strong conclusion to a fun weekend for the pilot of the Charlie Bee Honey/DSE Performance/Mudcat Entertainment Centre No.11.
“The guys did another good job Saturday night and we had another really nice track,” Jamie stated. “It was slick, but it was smooth. We changed the car a little bit during the day and it was for the better. I felt really comfortable all night. I was really close to a podium and it just got away, but I could see it. It was a good race and I had a lot of fun.”
Team Turner Racing will be back in action on Friday, July 12 at Ohsweken. Then the team will prepare for Humberstone Speedway on July 14 where they will enter a Crate Sprint Car in the rescheduled Bob Deswiage Memorial. The race is being run in honour of their late crew member who passed away over the off-season. Crew-member Brady Chastney will compete in a car styled after one of Bob’s old street stocks.
“We’re really looking forward to that event,” Cory said. “Our crew guy Brady is going to run a Crate car for Bob that we have all decaled up like one of his old street stocks, so it’s going to be a pretty cool night.”
